Synopsis...
Set on the incendiary fro ... more
Set on the incendiary frontier of California's turn-of-the-century petroleum boom, the story chronicles the rise of Daniel Plainview, who transforms himself from a down-and-out silver miner raising a son on his own into a self-made oil tycoon. When Plainview gets a mysterious tip that there's a little town out West where an ocean of oil is oozing out of the ground, he heads with his son, H.W., to take their chances in dust-worn Little Boston. In this hardscrabble town, where the main excitement centers around the holy-roller church of charismatic preacher Eli Sunday, Plainview and H.W. make their lucky strike. But even as the well raises all of their fortunes, nothing will remain the same as conflicts escalate and every human value--love, hope, community, belief, ambition and even the bond between father and son--is imperiled by corruption, deception and the flow of oil.    hide

Maybe one of the most boring movies of all time. There is no way you should pay for this movie. I was so moved by how boring this movie was that I just had to join to write a review. I love the reviewers that say, "If you have to have entertainment spoonfed to you, you might not like this film." Give me a break. Somehow people that don't like this film just aren't smart enough for it. I say, "If you love to sit at a bookstore, sipping coffee and talking about the great cinematography, this will be great for you." If you go to a movie for---and this might be a crazy idea to some---entertai nment, this movie is terrible. Someone point out to me the "Laugh out loud" scenes. The only laughing that I heard was at the end when EVERYONE in the theater laughed out loud as they had all been had.

This Upton Sinclair story provides
in insightful look into the heart and soul of a brilliant, demented
oil man portrayed with intensity
by Danial-Day Lewis. A performance
that should by rewarded with an
Oscar!

Hey Jack, you are an idiot. Most intelligent people who are writing a movie review, and not chatting with their friends about a film they've all seen, announce that they're going to drop a spoiler. Instead you've essentially ruined a movie for me that I'm dying to see. Thanks for being such a dumba**, and please don't "review" any more movies on this website.

I believe Scout is right on target. Plainview is Bush and Eli represents the Right Wing fanatics who were played by him and who put him in office, thumping their holy books like the ignorant, superstitious apes they are. I enjoyed how Plainview made Eli confess before slaughtering him. Bush skipped that part.

Not sure why, but I liked it. It's the kind of movie that a month from now I'll start to "get it." The movie makes a strong statement about the roots of big oil, how they began screwing people right from the very beginning and continue to do so today. Perhaps GW Bush is just the same kind of man as Plainview was, hating people, using them, treating them like lambs to be led and slaughtered at will.

I guess I just did'nt get it. Yes the cinamatography was good, and Day-Lewis's acting was great. I did not find the movie the least bit entertaining, and thats why go to the movies, to be entertained. If you really want to see this movie, wait till you see it in the section, "2 DVDs for $10.00".

Cinematic Perfection. Beautifully shot. Well acted by all. Daniel Day Lewis is amazing. As deep and brooding as it is, there are plenty of moments of absolute hysterical laughter in the theater. Don't miss it on the big screen.

A MASTERPIECE ! DANIEL DAY LEWIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTORS IN HISTORY. HIS CHARACTER GETS MORE CONSUMED WITH GREED AS THE MOVIE PROGRESSES & IT'S AN UNFORTUNATE DOWNWARD SPIRAL. THIS PICTURE REALLY PORTRAYS HOW PEOPLE WILL DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY, EVEN DESTROY ALL OF THEIR RELATIONSHIPS.

The film is excellent. If you are looking to be spoon fed your entertainment and sent out of the theatre with a nice neat little package and a warm pat on the back this film is not for you. Otherwise it is a major achievment in American cinema and should not be missed.
